      Hi Laura,

My first ever experiment I can remember was trying to see single cells with a microscope that my parents bought me. I was probably around 10 and I had read that if you peeled an onion skin you could get a very thin grey layer off it, which if stained in a purple dye, you can see all the cells.
I can remember being told not to do it on my own, because you would need to use a very sharp scalpel, but that didn’t stop me. I was badgering away, past my bedtime, trying to peel an onion carefully and I slipped and nearly sliced through my thumb 🙁

Lots of tears (from the onion *ahem*) and blood later I had to have stitches. I still have the scar as a reminder to be careful with sharp blades and to always cut away from your hand!!!!
