I don’t really work with DNA.

I have worked on a project that looked at how possible it was to fossilise DNA in amber and extract it like in Jurassic Park and needless to say we can’t 🙁

it just decays too quickly to fossilise.

My favourite DNA test is actually really simple and doesn’t tell you anything but it lets you see DNA with your eyes! Basically you smush up a strawberry and use some simple things like washing up liquid and pineapple juice to break up the strawberry’s individual cells. Then you get someone sensible to add ethanol to the mixture and the DNA clumps up and rises to the top of the mixture! It’s really cool to see something that’s usually too small for us to see without powerful microscopes!

Here’s a video of it happening – maybe ask your teacher if they can try it out in class!

      Hi,

My favourite DNA experiments were when I did the strawberry experiment like Steph mentioned (and I got to eat the leftover strawberries) or when I extracted my own DNA and then got to find out what part of it meant!

If you want to extract your own DNA you can try this experiment at home with your parents helping out: http://www.planet-science.com/categories/experiments/biology/2012/03/extract-your-own-dna.aspx
